The Story Behind India’s Election Ink

Do you know everything about the voting ink? India, the world’s largest democracy and the fifth-largest economy, stands proud as the most populous country as of October 2024. Here are some facts for you about the voting ink in India.

1. The purple colour ink that is put on a person’s finger once they have voted is made up of three elements — chemicals, dyes, and a special compound silver nitrate. The ink is applied on the finger to avoid duplication of votes.

2. No voter can cast a second vote in an election.

3. ‘Voter’s ink’ is produced by the state-owned Mysore Paints and Varnishes Ltd. (MVPL)

4. The MVPL factory was established during Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar’s rule in the 20th century.

6. It is the only company permitted to produce ‘voter’s ink’ in India, and it also supplies ink to 30 other countries.

7. According to MVPL, nearly 4.5 billion voters throughout the world have marked with this ink since 2019.
